District 31 in Hillsborough County was his district. She was a Democrat who had previously been chosen to serve as Ward 4’s representative in the House in 2012.
However, after learning of a prior criminal record, she withdrew from her position as Representative-elect. She also held the position of selectwoman for the ward.
Laughton was both the first openly transgender elected official in New Hampshire and the first openly transgender person to be elected to a state legislature anywhere in the United States.
Following her triumph, the media reported that Laughton had received jail sentences ranging from 3 1/2 to 7 years for faking physical evidence and from 7 1/2 to 15 years for conspiring to steal credit cards.
Later, the concurrent sentences were reduced by the Belknap County Department of Corrections to one year. She was released from prison after serving four months and 10 years of “good behavior.”

News of Stacie Marie Laughton’s arrest is widely available online. A Nashua Democrat who has already been detained several times is now again in legal jeopardy after being connected to at least two stalking incidents in nearby Hudson.
State lawmaker Stacie Marie Laughton was taken into custody on Saturday by Nashua police in connection with an arrest warrant out of Hudson for allegedly breaking a stalking order.
Few details about the case are currently known. However, Lt. Roger Lamarche, the second shift supervisor for the Hudson Police Department, confirmed the arrest and the charge.
Laughton was accused by the police of communicating with the victim on social media on November 8.
Stacie Marie Laughton was the target of the protection order when it was submitted on July 25. Laughton is also a municipal selectman.
According to Lamarche, Laughton has already been held because he may have spoken with the victim.
She was arrested in early September after being accused of stalking and harassment in late August.

The Valley Street Jail in Manchester is where she is being held. On suspicion of breaking seven laws about the penalty for giving false information and exploiting the state’s 911 texting system, she was taken into custody in July 2021.
She claimed that she was being spoofed at the time, according to an article on Patch.
She was convicted in 2008 of conspiring to conduct credit card fraud and fabricating physical evidence while living in Laconia as a guy.
About four years after she originally appeared on the ballot to run for state representative in Nashua, she was elected as the first transgender official in New Hampshire and one of just a few nationwide in November 2012.
After her election, her criminal history and jail sentence were made public. After discussing the media coverage with state Democrats and resigning, Laughton.
To be allowed to run for public office once more in the hopes of rejoining the municipal government, Laughton formed an exploratory committee in 2019 and paid $2,000 in restitution.
She ran for the selectman job she had previously held in Nashua and won. In 2020, she successfully campaigned for and was re-elected to the New Hampshire House of Representatives.
The case was discovered on Tuesday after officers were sent to a nearby facility for a juvenile issue, according to the public information officer for the Nashua Police Department.
