Holiday Traditions: Rick Steves
PBS is celebrating the holidays by sharing some of the favorite traditions, memories and recipes that make all of our holidays so very important and special. Each day we will highlight a new story from some of your favorite personalities.
Rick Steves is an expert on all things Europe, having seen and experienced it all during his travels. He shared three of his favorite Christmas traditions from across the continent.
“My favorite Christmas memory was taking a horse-drawn sleigh ride to an über-traditional Austrian house outside of Salzburg to make cookies, decorate the tree, and celebrate Christmas with the Schneeweiss family.”
“One of my favorite traditions is the living advent calendar in the Swiss alpine village of Gimmelwald, where the 25 days leading up to Christmas were each represented by a different family decorating their actual windows.”
With all of the delicious food options across Europe, it might be hard to pick one to highlight. But Rick has it nailed. “I loved the hot spiced wine with spicy little sausages in Nürnberg, Germany.”Rick Steves (www.ricksteves.com) writes European travel guidebooks and hosts travel shows on public television and public radio. His pledge special, Rick Steves’ European Christmas airs this month on many PBS stations. Check your local listings.
